Severe flash flooding in southern and eastern Spain has tragically claimed over 200 lives and injured many others, while over 90 people remain unaccounted for. While the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) correctly predicted further rainfall in the days following the DANA event, this was not as heavy as expected but has still hampered the efforts of all those trying to provide help.

Crawford continues to deploy all its infrastructure and expertise in Spain, mobilising loss adjusters from across the whole country to reinforce our operations in Alicante and Valencia. This allows us to provide support to clients during this challenging time, offering personalised attention and our extensive experience in dealing with natural disaster events.

We are also working closely with CCS – the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros – a compensation scheme provided by Spain’s Ministry of Economy and Business, and which has covered environmental risks since 1998.

While Crawford alone saw hundreds of claims in the first few days following the DANA impact (and with more being registered by the day), CCS reports receiving over 138,000 claims as of 8 November – more than the Consorcio managed in the entire year of 2023 – and has now called on Crawford to contribute to the army of over 800 loss adjusters deployed by the Ministry.

As torrential rain – amounting to a year’s worth in just eight hours – inundated cities like Valencia and Malaga, many found people were trapped in their homes and cars, surrounded by rapidly rising floodwaters. The storm caused severe damage, impacting especially the southern and eastern regions of Spain, leading to floods, traffic disruptions, destroyed crops, and even the derailment of a high-speed train.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has indicated that there will continue to be heavy, even torrential rains, over the next few days. 

Crawford is deploying all of our infrastructure and expertise in Spain to support our clients during this challenging time, offering personalized attention and our full experience in handling incidents arising from natural disaster events.

Since the onset of the DANA, we have mobilized a team in the affected areas to assess the damage incurred. Additionally, we have reinforced our Alicante and Valencia offices with adjusters from other regional offices.
