The UK’s EU departure date is fast approaching, yet how it will be conducted remains unclear. All possible scenarios are still on the table: deal, no deal, pausing or cancelling Brexit and with little time left on the Brexit clock, the only certainty is uncertainty.
In December 2018, the EU published its ‘no-deal’ Contingency Action Plan outlining temporary measures in critical areas designed to lessen the impact of such a departure. However, no matter what route the UK takes out of the EU, Brexit will likely create a new reality for the logistics and supply chains currently in place between EU Member States and the UK.
In a 'no deal' Brexit scenario, all relevant EU legislation on import and export will apply to goods moving between the EU and the UK. Inspections and custom formalities for freight traffic in and out of the UK will take place from one day to the next after Brexit. This situation could lead to disruption in the supply chain, resulting in delays and losses.
Given the potential for disruption to ‘just-in-time’ supply chains and lean production strategies, it is imperative that companies understand all of the potential Brexit-related delivery ramifications and are prepared for all eventualities.
